Professional biography

Tina Hannel is a certified school psychologist who has worked in public and private special education for 36 years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue and a Master of Science in School Psychology from St. John’s University.

In 2004, Tina earned a graduate certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis and has worked as a Licensed Behavior Analyst for 19 years in public education with special-needs populations ages 5–21. She later earned an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University in December 2015.

Tina has worked with neurotypical and special-needs children, adolescents, and adults in educational and private counseling settings. She has extensive experience with parent-child relationships, behavior management, autism and other developmental disabilities, anxiety, and depression.

Tina uses an eclectic approach informed by strengths-based and person-centered therapy, mindfulness, principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. She also incorporates play therapy and Floortime to support cognition, social-emotional development, and social problem-solving skills.

Tina views counseling as a dynamic process that can support individuals in reaching their potential within a safe, warm environment. She emphasizes a positive, respectful counseling relationship where people can identify strengths, recognize and apply solutions, and develop lasting personal and interpersonal skills.
